Established in 2019, the ELLIS Unit Copenhagen was founded by researchers from the University of Copenhagen, the Technical University of Denmark, and the IT University of Copenhagen, driven by a shared ambition to reinforce collaboration across Europe’s leading AI research institutions.
On 1 March 2026, the ELLIS Unit Copenhagen expanded into the ELLIS Unit Denmark, marking an important milestone in strengthening Denmark’s position at the international forefront of AI research and innovation, advancing scientific collaboration across the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) network.
The ELLIS Unit Denmark includes researchers from Aalborg University, Aarhus University, the University of Copenhagen, the Technical University of Denmark, the IT University of Copenhagen, and the University of Southern Denmark.
With strong ties to the Pioneer Centre for AI (P1), which serves as a hub for ELLIS activities in Denmark, the Unit operates as a national-level entity that connects AI research communities across institutions, contributing to a more coordinated and internationally competitive Danish AI ecosystem.
The ELLIS Unit Denmark actively contributes to ELLIS initiatives, spanning workshops, research programmes, innovation activities, and the ELLIS PhD & Postdoc Programmes, supporting international exchanges, joint supervision, and cross-sector collaboration.
European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS)
Across its sites, comprising 42 Units and 2 Institutes, the ELLIS network promotes cross-border collaboration and internationally competitive research environments that are essential for attracting and retaining top AI talent.
As a pan-European network of excellence, spanning 44 sites in 17 countries, ELLIS brings together more than 2,000 members, including 560 Fellows and Scholars and over 500 PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. Through the network, ELLIS connects leading researchers to build a multi-centric AI research laboratory and secure lasting international leadership in AI made in Europe.
