Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to transform nearly all aspects of human daily and professional life. The Internet has connected information, and Google has made it searchable. AI will leverage this information to the benefit of companies, governments, interest groups, and, if done in the right way, also to the benefit of the individual human being. It is essential that academia take a leading role in developing AI to balance out the influence of other interests. The ambition of the Pioneer Centre for AI (P1) is to stand at the international forefront and develop platforms, methods, and practices for a human centric AI.

We are inspired by the philosophy, Nothing About Us, Without Us, which is the idea that no policy should be decided by any representative without the full and direct participation of members of the group(s) and building on a strong Scandinavian tradition of participatory design. Excellent technology must be developed together with and respecting the position of all relevant stakeholders, emphasizing a human-centric direction in the global landscape of AI centres.

To pursue fundamental research and resolve many of the outstanding challenges within AI as a rapidly developing research field, an interdisciplinary collaboratory organisation has been designed with world leading researchers to steer them. The collaboratories will gather the Danish community and encourage inter-institutional collaboration to further boost international research impact. We will approach the challenges via a novel 7-step framework and focus on developing young researchers and future leaders.

Research in the collaboratories will consistently focus on Explainability, Self-supervised learning, Novelty detection, and Fair AI.
