Primary Point of Contact

About

The Nordic AI Partnership is a collaboration between the Danish Pioneer Centre for Artificial Intelligence (P1), the Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence (FCAI), the Icelandic Center for Analysis and Design of Intelligent Agents (CADIA), the Norwegian Artificial Intelligence Research Consortium (NORA), and the Swedish Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP).

The partners are national, and internationally facing, research-anchored institutions, producing research (papers and code) at top tier venues in Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, and other subareas of AI.

To formalize the long-standing AI collaboration between the academic AI initiatives in the Nordic countries, NORA, P1, WASP, FCAI and CADIA have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The purpose of this MoU is to advance cooperation between the Parties to advance AI research, education and innovation in the Nordic region and beyond.

The partnership is structured around three core pillars of collaboration, reinforcing knowledge diffusion, strategic coherence, and collaboration:

Research
  • Strengthen research collaboration across the Nordic region by facilitating team formation, connecting researchers, groups, and networks, and supporting the securing of funding for joint projects.
  • Foster a world-class AI research ecosystem that combines scientific excellence with impact-driven research addressing pressing societal challenges, particularly in areas of strategic relevance to the Nordic region.
Education
  • Advance AI education and community building, serving as a platform for collaboration, forming strategic partnerships, and promoting knowledge exchange and mobility across the Nordic AI landscape.
  • Position the Nordic region as the leading global hub for AI, attracting and retaining national and international top talent through world-class scientific excellence, access to advanced research infrastructure and ressources, strong commitments to inclusivity and equity, and high-quality working conditions.
Innovation
  • Reinforce strategic coherence and coordinating efforts across research, education, industry, and policy, building on existing mechanisms and creating new initiatives where needed.
  • Position the Nordic region at the international forefront of responsible and human-centred AI.
  • Bridge the gap between basic research and market-ready AI through cross-institutional- and sectoral collaboration and partnerships, translating research breakthroughs into solutions that address societal challenges, strengthen competitiveness, and drives sustainable economic growth.

Providing a platform for collaboration, the Nordic AI Partnership aims to leverage the unique Nordic advantages to develop responsible AI systems, offering a distinctive competitive edge in the global AI landscape, built on trust, transparency, and openness, by bringing together the Nordic AI community as an important step forward. Together, we are forming a lasting collaborative framework to advance AI research, strengthen education, and drive innovation in the Nordic region and beyond.

Nordic AI Meet

The Nordic AI Meet is a pan‑Nordic conference co-organized by the partners, designed to support early career researchers in the field of artificial intelligence and serve as an annual meeting place. Since 2021, the Nordic AI Meet (Nordic AI Young Researcher Symposium) have provided a platform for collaboration reinforcing knowledge exchange on AI and its applications in the Nordic region.

Each year, hosting of the Nordic AI Meet has rotated among the partners, connecting and supporting the upcoming generation of researchers who will influence future directions, the Nordic AI Meet gathers Master's students, PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and early-stage researchers to explore emerging ideas, methodologies, theoretical frameworks, and build professional networks.

Nordic Machine Intelligence Journal

The Nordic Machine Intelligence (NMI) is a peer-reviewed, diamond open-access journal that publishes a broad range of scholarly work in artificial intelligence (AI). While NMI's primary goal is to disseminate high-quality research, and thus welcomes contributions from researchers worldwide, a secondary objective is to serve as a central forum for Nordic research communities, emphasizing themes of particular relevance to AI within the Nordic context. Beyond research articles, NMI aspires to feature a diverse array of discussion and opinion pieces that address Nordic opportunities and challenges in AI research.
