From Atlases to Radiological AI

Abstract

The talk will trace some of the seminal developments in medical image processing and analysis in which Professor James Gee has been involved in at the University of Pennsylvania. The hope is that this retrospective will help provide perspective and grounding for understanding and advancing the exciting new approaches and methods represented by today’s state-of-the-art.

Bio

James Gee is a Professor of Radiologic Science in Radiology and in Computer and Information Science at the University of Pennsylvania, where his group carries out research in biological and medical image analysis, and radiological AI. The team is best known for methods that have enabled population imaging studies, digital atlases, and computational anatomy. Furthermore, the team is recognized for their open-source tools which underpin hundreds of published imaging studies across the world every year. This research is complementary to Professor Gee's educational activities, which focus on training that is at the interface between medicine and the engineering and computational sciences and includes the Interfaces Interdisciplinary Graduate Training Program in Biomedical Imaging and Informational Sciences that I helped to conceive and direct. A new research direction focuses on medical AI for low resource environments and global health.
